Something interesting is going on in Beppu, Kyushu, the leading hot spring resort of Japan with as many as 104 public baths.
It is an art festival called 'Mixed Bathing World:Beppu Contemporary Art Festival 2009'. With passport and map in hand, viewers will explore the town in search of works of art spread throughout. Along the way they will come in contact with the many expressions that Beppu takes on. Eight artists from different national backgrounds visited Beppu, chose their own locations, and presented artwork possible nowhere else. There are many associated events such as live music and dance performance scheduled during the festival. Please visit their official site for more information.
[Art Gate Cruise] A traditional style Japanese hotel that still retains the charm and ambiance of the ultra-modernist Meiji Era, the 100-year-old tenement house, the former guesthouse built in the early stages of Showa era, the shrine and harbour which for decades have offered protection for seafarers and families alike ... these unique places all of which represent Beppu's long and rich history will become "Art Gate Cruise", through the creative endeavours of eight leading international artists, who themselves have long-since left their own home country, and taking the form of site-specific installations, the commissioned works reflect both the artists own history and sense of place as well as the diverse nature of Beppu's links with the wider world...

My friend from London sent me the information on the forthcoming charity art auction 'GIFTED - Charity Art Auction' which he is also helping with. It was launched last year and they are going to have another one to go this coming June.
Here are the details on the auction:
The second GIFTED auction will be held on 18th June this year at RIBA HQ (Royal Institute of British Architects). All proceeds from the sales of the artworks will be donated to Kids Co and Teenage Cancer Trust.
The first GIFTED auction held in July 2008 (also at RIBA) raised ￡7,000 for Macmillan Cancer Support and Havens Hospices. Many of last years contributors of work were a mix of graduates of Central St Martins, talented young artists and the more established Julian Opie.
They are hoping to substantially increase the sum raised. Already donated are a limited edition Picasso print - from an original linocut donated by Fred Mulder, director of The Funding Network, four prints by leading artist James Turrell and contributions from Rankin, photographer and founder and publisher of Dazed & Confused and painter Jonathan Yeo. New work will be added to the website as it is donated.
A selection of about 50 works donated will be auctioned on June 3rd 2009 at RIBA and the rest will be available to buy on the website as well.
